Maris Interiors has been appointed to undertake the office design and relocation of the new office of Brompton Bicycle Ltd.
Brompton Bicycle is the leading manufacturer of folding bicycles. The unique Brompton folding bike was designed and built in London in 1975 by Andrew Ritchie in his flat in South Kensington opposite the Brompton Oratory. Still made in London today, Brompton is making over 45,000 bikes per year and is the UK’s largest bike manufacturer.
The ultimate goal of the project will be to ensure that the new office meets the key values of Brompton Bicycle: Innovation, Quality & British. We will be constructing a mezzanine floor which will contain a viewing gallery to allow tour groups to have an unrivalled perspective across the factory floor and Brompton’s unique assembly processes. In addition to the factory floor; Maris are designing a new 60-person canteen, open-plan collaborative design studio, a tech-support area and a retail store/ museum.
The new location at 1 Greenford Park will provide an agile adaptable working space to meet the company’s needs and is scalable to meet the future growth plans. The British manufacturer aims to make 100,000 bikes a year by 2021, so is moving to the 86,000 sq ft plant in Greenford, west London, which is nearly twice the size of its current base in nearby Brentford.
Chief financial officer, Lorne Vary, said “We’ve got a highly skilled workforce … and we really wanted to take our staff with us. Additionally in the overseas market Made in London is very strong; British manufacturing is held in high esteem, so to a lesser degree that was important”.
