Having a bad hair day at work? A bit windswept running for the bus?
According to new research, it could be worth tidying up your locks in the office bathroom.
At least that seems to be the case in Australia, where 73% of people associate tidy hair with professionalism. The study shows that women who wear their hair ‘loose’ are seen as being less proficient than their neater-haired colleagues. If you’re a redhead, there’s even more bad news. The nation that gave us Nicole Kidman appear to believe that red is the ‘least professional’ of all hair colours.
The study doesn’t reveal what Australians think of the grooming habits of men, but if the research is anything to by, it might be worth investing in a good hat if you’re emigrating to Australia.
David Cannon, Managing Director of workplace designers Maris Interiors, is skeptical. “Appearance is important, true. But as long as you’re tidy and clean, then it shouldn’t really matter too much. And all the redheads working at Maris are extremely professional! I feel quite protective now.”
