The Body Shop

Client Background

Founded in 1976 in Brighton, England, by Anita Roddick, The Body Shop is a global beauty brand offering high-quality, naturally-inspired skincare, hair care and make-up produced ethically and sustainably. The Body Shop was the first international cosmetics company to introduce fair trade to the cosmetics and toiletries industry in 1987 and now has more than 3,000 stores in more than 60 countries.

Points of note

The relocation of The Body Shop HQ from London Bridge to a 4 floor location in Croydon was the birth of a great design collaboration between The Body Shop and Maris Interiors who designed and built the project in one of the most aggressive timelines, from initial design in mid-November 2015 to construction completion in March 2016. The clear vision of brand led to the design concept of using “Global Presence” as the driving factor, with key features inspired by natural materials juxtaposed with technology bringing the brand image to a higher level. Out of all retailers, The Body Shop has the most global presence in the world, having stores in 65 countries and continually growing. With this in mind, the global design concept was captured through the clever use of natural materials manifested by multiple wood veneers representing different continents. These contrasting veneers were cleverly used in joinery work, furniture and flooring materials.

The 10th floor, which housed the main meet and greet facilities utilised a “concierge” concept where there is no barrier between receptionist and guest. The Body Shop concierge gives the visitor a whole new experience of the brand. Key design elements that complete the experience is the “Living Wall” bearing The Body Shop logo under a backdrop of living plants, with origins from five continents, laid out in the silhouette of the world map. On the other side is a large video wall which streams brand content, graphics and other media that give the sense of being ‘in the now’. In the centre of the space is a large crescent sofa, which is highlighted by a grand gesture of a ceiling light fixture in wood that comes in the shape of The Body Shop logo.

Completing the space is the concierge desk and coffee table, all done in strips of five veneers representing the five continents. The three working floors were carefully planned using a new corporate strategy splitting teams into a more collaborative configuration through planning and vertical team stacking. Each floor has a distinct colour; all based on the new The Body Shop brand guidelines. These way-finding colours are showcased in each floor using feature carpets, bold graphics, collaboration booths and reading corners dressed with thematic wallpaper, lighting, soft furnishing and paint effects, which add touches of domesticity.

The success of the project has led to heightened staff productivity and a feeling of a better work life balance, which will continually improve the talent pool of The Body Shop in the UK and ensure that the best people are retained.
